Originating in the early eighties in Spanish Town Jamaica, dancehall music developed out of a reaction to the popularity of traditional reggae. Initially, it was defined by selectors toasting on top of instrumental tracks, soon evolving into a distinct mix of synthesized sounds, infectious beats, and sometimes explicit lyrics.
